What Indian traditional medicine say about cow milk

Ayurveda strongly recommends having milk in the evening or nighttime for its incredible digestive properties. In addition to its many health and beauty benefits, drinking milk promotes Ojas. Ojas is referred to as a state in Ayurveda that is achieved when you achieve proper digestion.

According to Ayurveda, milk provides special and unique nutrition that cannot be derived from any other type of food. Milk, when digested properly, nourishes all the tissues, promotes balanced emotions, and helps to balance all the doshas.

cow's milk is highly regarded in Ayurveda for calming both vata and pitta. As per Ayurveda, the best time to consume milk for adults is before bedtime. As for kids, Ayurveda recommends an early morning dose of milk.

In Siddha medical practice milk plays a key role in some of the medicines as ingredients and some in as Anupanam (vehicle). In Siddha medicine, it is recommended to consume sour curd, melted ghee, and plenty of milk. The calcium absorption from milk is also better at night due to less activity levels.

Color Of Cow Milk

Here in this blog, we are going to see the color difference between cow milk and buffalo. Cow milk is mild yellowish-white in color, while buffalo milk is creamy white. In buffalo milk beta- carotene pigment gets converted to colorless Vitamin- A, which makes it look white color.

Beta-carotene is found in the grass where the cows graze on. It is a fat-soluble compound. β-Carotene is an antioxidant that serves various immune regulatory properties. The body converts Beta Carotene into vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin A, known as a vital nutrient for vision, plays a critical role in cell growth and in maintaining healthy organs like the heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Also, cow milk has more sulfur content which gives yellowish-white color. In the above picture, the one on the left is buffalo milk and the one in right is cowmilk. above all these scientific statements it is really not mandatory that cow milk should be yellowish-white color, sometimes it may change depending on the cattle's feed, grazing geo-location, temperature, and cattle endocrine system.

In the next blog, we will see the fat content of cow milk.

Warm milk & good sleep

Milk contains an essential amino acid L-tryptophan which is changed to serotonin by the human body which helps controlling mood and sleep.

Further serotonin helps to produce melatonin. Melatonin is produced and synthesized in the pineal gland. It is one of the key hormones which controls circadian rhythm (a natural, internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats roughly every 24 hours.).

Drinking milk helps in having good sleep and helps to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm making the body's endocrine system (The endocrine system is a messenger system comprising feedback loops of the hormones released by internal glands) work properly. When the endocrine system works fine all the issues related to hormonal imbalance get corrected and helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Melatonin takes a key role in modulating the immune system and also works as an antioxidant.

In the next blog, we will see the color of cow milk.

Milk Proteins

Proteins are nothing but large-weight polymers and are the building block of any living thing.

Milk is the best source of all essential amino acids (Amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins).

Cow milk has a complete amino acid profile, making them ideal for those who want to build lean muscle and strength, lose fat or recover faster from training. Cow milk is high in lysine, histidine, leucine, valine, tryptophan, and many more amino acids.

                                                        Milk protein is classified into

Milk contains 3.3% of total protein. Milk proteins contain all 9 essential amino acids required by humans. Total milk protein content and amino acid composition vary with cow breed, individual animal genetics, feed, and geo-conditions.

Proteins can be degraded by enzyme action, exposure to light, heat, or microbial growth. When heated above 85 °C many of the proteins are denatured. Milk has three proteins, most are casein (in the colloidal state), then albumin and globulin (soluble) states. Of the three, globulin and albumin are denatured above 85 °C while the structure of the casein is not obviously changed.

Let's discuss A1beta casein and A2beta casein sometime later after learning the complete biochemistry of "MILK".

The main mineral binder in a casein protein molecule is calcium and phosphorus, but also whey proteins and lactoferrin bind specific minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, sodium, and potassium.

what you get in bodybuilding supplements is nothing but whey protein and what we eat in cheese and paneer is a blend of casein protein.

The liver is one of the most important organs for synthesizing proteins.

In the next blog, we will see how milk makes a positive impact on sleep.

Lactose (The Milk carbohydrate)

The carbohydrate present in milk is called Lactose. Lactose is a disaccharide carbohydrate (In simple words carbohydrates are nothing but sugar). A disaccharide is a combination of two monosaccharide carbohydrates (two sugar molecules).

It is a sugar composed of galactose and glucose and has the molecular formula C12H22O11.

The enzyme lactase is needed to break down lactose into galactose and glucose.

If a person has lactose intolerance, their digestive system produces too little lactase enzyme resulting in improper digestion. Symptoms can include abdominal cramps, bloating, and diarrhea. The same symptoms can be common in other milk allergies also.

Lactase is an enzyme produced in the small intestine. The body uses lactase to break down lactose into components called galactose and glucose. The glucose is then absorbed into the bloodstream.

If a person’s lactase levels are low, the lactose does not break down and it does not absorb into the bloodstream. Instead, it moves into the large intestine or colon. Bacteria in the colon react to any product that contains lactose by creating more gas. That can lead to discomfort and other unpleasant symptoms for the individual.

In some regions, the majority of people carry a gene that allows them to digest lactose. Lactose intolerance is less common in people who are from India as Indians have a long history in cattle rearing and consumption of milk and dairy products like curd, butter, ghee, and paneer.
